So, the Promise Ring started an official twitter account. It would appear that rumors of their resurgence have surfaced into vague truths. I really couldn't be happier about this, especially after missing their reunions. I hope this twitter account is indeed the start of a something bigger. I saw The Promise Ring at Valentine's in Albany, NY in 1999 with Pele opening. I remember driving with 3 of my friends to the club thinking "Oh man, I wonder if anyone is even gonna be there?" Albany is a small town for a small city and I hadn't even heard about the show before a few days ago, a small poster taped inside the club's window was most of the advertising. However, the local college station was sponsoring the event so it could've gone a couple ways. When we arrived the line was around the block. Luckily, we got in, I found a single, solitary chair up front next to the stage and thus claimed it. When I stood up on the chair I was looking out across the front of the stage from the front left corner, 2 feet or so above the crowd. I had that spot for The Promise Ring's whole set. They were incredible that night. When the slower songs set in they seemed to rock back and forth in their shoes as one, almost like some giant musical pendulum. My friend Tom called out for the to play "Is this thing on?" Davey looked at him, smiled, said they unfortunately weren't going to, then sang a couple bars of the song by himself, spun around with his guitar, and smiled again. The crowd laughed heartily and they broke right into "The Deep South". Most of their set that night came from the record they were out supporting, "Very Emergency!". That record, in turn, rarely left my ears for several years afterwards. I really hope a reunion is in the works. Come on, they could do a sold out club tour on their own. Hell, they could go out on tour with someone like The Weakerthans and do multiple single city gigs like crazy. Or open for a big rock band on a national tour. In any of those scenarios their music would echo through rooms and walls and windows and ears. Their music would reverberate from their amplifiers into our souls, just as it did over a decade ago. The spot in my soul for that music is on permanent reserve.
