Frog Drop. (2020). A ~ v e r y ~ late appreciation fan art for Final Fantasy IX's 20th anniversary. FF9 was one of my favorite games when I was just a smolboi. I think I replayed it three times because I enjoyed it so much, and I wanted to discover/finish all the side quests and minigames (I think I finally capitulated, and used a guide by the third playthrough). I remember being amazed when I randomly tried Quina's Frog Drop skill and found out it consistently did 9999 damage, and not knowing exactly why it did so ( It was after the fact, that I learned that the frog catching minigame - which I LOVED - factored in its damage boost.) Reading up further, I found out that Quina - who, I disregarded (because I didn't know any better) back then as a joke character - was versatile and OP as heck, and thus s/he became a staple party member, and my favorite character in the game. Imagine being Ozma - a nigh-omnipotent being - or Necron - the manifestation of Death itself - and you're getting assblasted by a gourmand who keeps dropping giant frogs on you. *chef's kiss* Done in 2020.

Nyx as a blue mage!
Like, blue magic is one of the few remaining natural magicks that is not bound to a family. Case in point white magic with the Fleuret family and black magic with the Lucis Caelums. If things had been different people like Crowe would have been natural born black mages, but the Astrals bound those types of magic to family lines. (Which is a Bad Idea)
So blue magic remains (along with maybe green magic). Animals have a natual magic of their own. Blue mages have a spark that latches on to that magic and takes a tiny bit for their own.
People don’t necessarily know they are blue mages. It’s a suptle talent when you don’t actively use it. A person could have really good eyesight like a thunderoc, or move silently like a coerl, be fast like a spiracorn, or strong like a behemoth.
It could be explained away. It could be. Most of the time it is. But Nyx has had a stong connection with coerls for a long time (since before Galah fell), and every time he met one that spark in him took a tiny bit of that coerls magic, until it was enough.
Enough to be a power that could be actively used.
There was a mission and it went to shit very fast. He acted on instinct. Took his kukri, spun around and there was lighting. It was not the kings magic, but something primal and wild within his own chest. It growles and howles and you don’t attack what is his.
