hey. can i get your thoughts behind ' political lesbianism does not and never will hurt lesbians'.
thatâs something i said, iâm pretty sure. itâs a little more complicated than that, but it wasnât appropriate to elaborate given the topic i mentioned it.
women who could technically be bisexual but choose to function societally as lesbians (political lesbians) will not ever harm the community by being there.gold star mentality among lesbians is irrational and immaterial at best, openly transmisogynist at worst.if women are strictly taught to hate each other, and devote themselves to men, then there are going to be a lot of lesbians who end up being attracted to men in SOME capacity, sometimes irrevocably, but if theyâve chosen not to indulge in this, thereâs absolutely no reason to try drawing a line.to make it metaphorical, no one would blame you if you hated yourself after being told to enough. no one would call an abuse victim a fake for admittedly internalizing this, or for never fully being able to bounce back from hating themselves in their thoughts.if you can be tricked into hating yourself, you can be tricked into loving men. no one can reasonably identify how much either one of those things wouldâve occurred in a vacuum.i tend to readily trust self-identified political lesbians than âitâs not my faulT I WAS JUST BORN LOVING PUSSIE SO MUCHâ Real Lesbians(TM) because itâs one thing to feel stuck in an unwinnable situation because you have no way out, but itâs another thing to actively choose it, despite the risks and all, for solidarity.
those are my thoughts behind that. mainly, donât bother agonizing over figuring out if youâre one of those POLITICAL lesbians or a REAL lesbian, itâs not doing anything bad by just existing.
for the complexity part of the issue-- political lesbianism, i feel, can often devolve into unhealthy self-loathing and (more often, in my experience) open vitriol for anyone who isnât a political lesbian, in a sort of âwho can be the most politically pure identityâ deal. a lot of it becomes performative and in this way it Can hurt lesbians.as a mindset one absorbs and caricaturizes, tho, not as people who are just political lesbians.
