So the DA epistolary wasn't even second place in the poll but you know what I'm just going to drop a letter a day anyway until I run out of them.

Chapter 3 is (finally) live! Zoey Huntr/x why do you hate me, this chapter fought me so much harder than anything has for years.
Anyway in this installment, a dinner, a Nice Young Man, some SLS fan nonsense, and Celine's B+ parenting make an appearance. Please enjoy.
As someone who knows you have (at best) a secondary interest in the character: pitch us a Two-Face movie, bruh
What like the Joker movie? Bearing in mind that even for villains I do like, I consider the idea of a âvillain movieâ to be profoundly boring and gratuitous, hereâs the best I can do for something I... would still probably not go see, but might watch on Netflix, I guess, if I saw it while surfing:
We open the film with credits rolling over the speech that everyone agrees won Harvey his campaign two years ago. Itâs bold and incendiary - he says that everyone knows Gotham has a mob problem, and lists as evidence the Five Families, the Dragons, and the cops. Gangs, he says, are, after all, a symptom of a society that canât trust its police. (So are vigilantes, if we want to make some side references to the Bats.) If you elect Harvey Dent, heâll be tough on crime, no matter what clothing it wears. Heâs gonna clean up this district.
We immediately see that itâs a lie, as Renee Montoya barges in to his present-day office and chews him a new one for declining to prosecute a killer cop. While Harvey is our protagonist, Montoya is ultimately the hero of this film; the two of them were friends from way back, who wanted to reform the system from inside together, but she got forced out and he capitulated. Heâs done the math, and heâd rather get cushy bribes for going with the flow than the death threats he got (and Montoya still gets) for pushing back.
So hereâs our tension, our psychic split; the good man Harvey wants to be, and the fearful, obedient nihilist that his father and the police state both want from him. We spend most of the story with Good Man Harvey, who Montoya is able to poke back into dominance; he decides to go ahead with the case, gets attacked by the defendantâs goons, argues in court with a half-destroyed face, does the Right Thing and ultimately gets the offender a jury conviction. We see Two-Face peek through more and more, though, as the story goes on, and the way the system heâs in has basically created him. He tries to do something good and is foiled or punished, he does something complacent or abusive and is rewarded, and now that his conscience is awake again itâs breaking him. Heâs constantly arguing with himself over whether these things actually matter, whether it would be someone else doing it if it werenât him, whether him doing the right thing would actually accomplish anything. He becomes less and less able to make decisions for himself, and we should get the sense that by the end, heâs mainly still going after the cop because itâs the one thing both Harvey (on principle) and Two-Face (for vengeance) can agree on.
We contrast this with Montoya as a PI, who does most of the actual work of collating evidence and getting witnesses to come forward while Harveyâs losing it, who keeps her head in the game because sheâs willing to use community resources and rely on better social structures. Sheâs still kind of a loner asshole, because she is still Montoya, but unlike Harvey sheâs not stuck in the isolated, Western, lone-superhero mindset where individual choices matter more than collective action, so itâs not driving her insane that her individual choices arenât able to singlehandedly fix the disaster that is Gotham. She does try a bit to get Harvey out of his own head and focus instead on the small ways that his actions very much do matter to the individual people he interacts with, partly for his own sake in honor of their (by now thoroughly shattered) friendship and partly because Harveyâs victims deserve a voice, but she gives up by probably the halfway mark of the film, since she has better things to do than Mammy a nascent supervillain.
The ultimate resolution of the film would be that, once itâs all over, Harvey sits in his office with the horizontal blinds casting nice moody lighting, and his assistant walks in with info on another killer cop. âAre we gonna prosecute?â the PA asks, and Harvey pauses, then flips his coin. Cut to Montoya, putting away her file on the old killer cop, and opening a new one labeled âHarvey Dent.â

oh hey i wrote a very short fic about kit being sad. mind the tags.
Commentary on the statement sequence from canât live on prayers like these?
Gladly! (The story in question is here.)Â
The first thing about this statement is that itâs also about Jon and Martin. This probably is not necessary to point out, as I wasnât very subtle, but that was my main goal in writing it: to tell a story with a similar enough dynamic that it would set both of them on edge, even if they didnât explicitly think about it in those terms. (Elias picked the statement out. Itâs not in the fic that he did this on purpose, butâŚ) The second thing is that I absolutely do not know the rest of the story about Elise and her brother, or even what entity was involved; I didnât want to write a whole horror story within this story, or I never would have finished it. I do feel bad for Caroline though. The third thing is that when I was almost finished with this fic, I broke my self-imposed catching-up hiatus and listened to Another Twist, and then got mad at Jonny for writing a much clearer parallel than I was. (I love Another Twist! I love it for reasons unrelated to Jon/Martin parallels, even. But at the time I was like⌠HEYâŚ)
Some line by line notes under the cut:
someone bug me tomorrow about editing this melanie/basira fic please. thanx
