You mentioned last year that the holiday season is where YouTubers make a lot more from ads than usual, and you were happy that your Sonic 3 video made it out just in time. Do you have any projects of a similar production quality and scale coming up for this month?
On the scale of the Sonic 3 video, where itās an inherently interesting topic because Sonic 3 contains a number of mysteries that people are hungry to learn about?
A video with proper scripted voice over and real production quality?
Unfortunately, I am fully prepared for this video to come out and hit like a lead weight. Video reviews havenāt been doing super great numbers for me for a long time. The people want more āDefinitive Way To Playā videos or what-have-you. At the very least, they want more Sonic videos. I know where my audience primarily is. This is not a video for my audience. This is a video for me. This is a script I wrote years ago and itās been rattling around in my Google Docs for a rainy day.
Most of the video projects Iāve done in the last four years have been big productions. Some of the longest, most involved, most in-depth videos on my channel. Absolutely exhausting to put together.
I am sitting on a number of fully-complete scripts. Many that I also wrote years ago that had to take a back-seat to TSSZ work or whatever ADHD whim my brain distracts itself with. Most of those scripts are going to be big productions.
I have mentioned it offhand many times, but I literally wrote a documentary on NiGHTS into Dreams. It is 6000 words flat. By comparison, my āHow Do We Fix Sonic?ā script (aka the most complex video Iāve ever produced) was 4900 words. The NiGHTS video is going to be enormous and I am afraid of that fact, but next year is the 25th Anniversary, so itās getting in to now-or-never territory.
I have a Shenmue video that I wrote on a whim after a friend suggested revisiting some of my old video reviews now that I am older and wiser. That seemed like a fun idea, but I had no idea what to do there, then I watched like... two minutes of Jeff Gerstmann complain about Shenmue in a Demo Derby video and suddenly 2900 words fell in to Google Docs. Iām waiting until I eventually buy and play Shenmue 3 before committing to calling that totally script finished, but it currently reads as a complete thought.
And then thereās the long-awaited Sonic Forces video, which at this point isnāt entirely about Sonic Forces anymore. That script has gone through a lot of evolution (more than any other script Iāve ever written) and currently sits at 3300 words. Itās also not done yet, but itās moving in that direction. Ideally I want that out before Sega announces a new Sonic game next year, but Iād settle for having it out before it hits store shelves (likely this time next year).
I picked this Jurassic Park video because I figured it would be simple. I was burnt out after the Sonic 3 video and I rode that burnout in to the pandemic, where it grew a long, long tail. From the outside, the Jurassic Park video looked short and easy, but after all is said and done, itās 3500 words. The recorded dialog puts it somewhere in the ballpark of 23-25 minutes. I guess I just have to accept that I probably canāt make short video reviews anymore.
Anyway, itāll be out soon-ish. By next week, maybe. $2 Patreon donors just got a sneak peek of the first three minutes today yesterday.
