Black Lives Matter isn’t just a hashtag. It isn’t just a thing that’s ‘cool’ for the moment. Something to post on your page to garner likes and attention. It’s not just something to make you feel good - make you feel like you’re doing something. Black Lives Matter is a cry for help. It’s a cry for YOU to pay attention. This isn’t a fad or a trend. It’s not something to try on and forget even existed. It isn’t a performance. In this community that I’m a part of, the fan artist community, the readers, the book lovers, y’all have a HUGE problem with ignoring black voices. You don’t know how to draw/paint us so you don’t even try. And when you’re called out for whitewashing, your excuse is ‘it’s just how I see the character’ and ‘everyone can see a character in their own way! They’re not real!’ It doesn’t matter. That shit wont fly anymore. It is no longer, and HAS NEVER BEEN an acceptable excuse. Your time is up. I’m calling all fandom artists and readers to start representing US. BIPOC voices and images. Paint us. Read us. Listen to us. Because REPRESENTATION MATTERS. No, mini moon is not black but REPRESENTATION. MATTERS. and y’all have been ignoring us for far, far too long. The time for change was yesterday. A week ago. A year. A decade. A century. You, WE are late. So if you’re going to stand up now, stand up forever. If you’re gonna post up with that energy, KEEP IT. Don’t let this die. Don’t let our voices fade into the background - to be drowned out again, ignored with ignorance.
