#Repost --- Let’s talk about the difference between opioid addiction and opioid dependence. Since the stigma is that we are drug seekers. A lot of us have been on high doses of opioids since we were children, therefore our tolerance for these medications has grown with age. Opioids are prescribed to treat pain. With prolonged use, pain-relieving effects may lessen and pain can become worse. In addition, the body can develop dependence. Opioid dependence causes withdrawal symptoms, which makes it difficult to stop taking them. Addiction occurs when dependence interferes with daily life. Taking more than the prescribed amount or using illegal opioids like heroin may result in death. Sickle Cell Patients just want to have a better quality of life, yes of course there are some “bad apples” in the bunch that may need help because they are addicted to medication. This doesn’t mean that ever single sickle cell patient is a drug seeker, or is addicted to their medication. It’s sickle cell awareness month let’s continue to have the conversation and break the stigma!! #SCAW2020 #BLFSC #BoldPlus #BreakTheStigma #ContinueTheConversation https://www.instagram.com/p/CEqFWn3D1qo/?igshid=1k28xh6plodl6
