how to array object along curve in blender (no more copy-paste hell)
ok so.
Youāre trying to make a row of things follow a curved path. Streetlights. Chains. Spikes. Whatever.
And youāre likeā¦Ā Iāll just duplicate them. One by one. By hand.
NO. STOP.
I did that once. For like an hour. My wrist hurt. My brain hurt. And then the client changed the curve shape and I wanted to scream.
Then I learnedĀ how to array object along curve in Blender 5Ā ā and oh my GOD.
The first time I dragged a curve point and watched like ten cubes slide into placeĀ together? Smoother than a hot knife through butter.Ā Whoosh.Ā No stutter. No fighting. Justā¦Ā chefās kiss.
hereās the trick (three steps, i swear)
Add a Bezier curve (Shift + AĀ ā Curve ā Bezier). Edit mode (Tab). Grab those little dots (G`). Make a squiggle. Any squiggle.
Add your object. A cube is fine. Scale it down (S) so it doesnāt look like a monster on a tiny road.
Select the object. Go toĀ Modifier PropertiesĀ (wrench icon). AddĀ ArrayĀ modifier.
Look forĀ Array TypeĀ dropdown. PickĀ CURVE.
A box appears:Ā Curve Object. Click the dropper tool. Click your curve.
BOOM.
Your object jumps onto the curve. Copies everywhere. Automatically.
I literally said āoh COME ON thatās it?ā the first time.
now tweak it
Count modeĀ = fixed number of copies (type 10, get 10)
Distance modeĀ = fixed spacing (set 2 meters, Blender figures out how many fit)
Also thereās aĀ RandomizeĀ section. Tiny random rotations. Makes it look organic instead of robot-stamped. Great for rocks, trees, fences.
best part? edit the curve later
Go back to your curve. Edit mode. Move a point.
The array updatesĀ live. All the cubes slide into new positions. Together. Like theyāre dancing.
Iām not kidding. That feeling isĀ so good.
common fails (i made them all)
nothing happens ā forgot to assign the curve. use the dropper, dummy.
only one copy ā count is set to 1. change it.
objects face wrong way ā look for āalign to curveā or āfollow curve.ā turn it on.
everything looks squished ā your cube is too big. scale it down.
just watch someone do it
i can type all day but sometimes you need to see the clicks.
hereās a short video. no fluff. skip to like 1:50.
