The Nether was once a cold and icy realm, with volcanic activity deep below. It was home to breezes, ghasts, and the piglins. There may have been more fauna in the Nether, but they went extinct long ago, and any record of them has been lost to time.

The piglins were a people native to the Nether who resembled boars. They had a rich history and revolutionized blacksmithing with their knowledge, some scholars credited them with the invention of blacksmithing.

One of the piglins most notable achievements was the discovery of Netherite, an incredibly rare metal that could only be found within the deepest layers of the Nether. The metal was fire resistant, and didn't rust, however it was brittle and near impossible to work with on its own. The piglins found it became quite easy to work with when combined with gold, creating a very durable alloy.

When humans came to the Nether, the piglins' knowledge was heavily sought after.

Unfortunately, the War of the Magi had wreaked havoc on the Nether's ecosystem. The flames of burning camps, and the smoke of weapon forges had polluted it's atmosphere, causing the climate to change before most of its creatures could adapt.

The breezes could adapt, evolving into what we know as the blaze. The piglins became isolated, for fear that connection with others would only result in more home destroying bloodshed. The ghasts were hit the hardest by the war, and the changes it brought.

Ghasts were a friendly, semi-aquatic species of megafauna. They were often used to transport goods between the layers of the Nether. It was also found that their tears had healing properties, being used in alchemy to allow the injured to recover much faster.

In the war, ghasts were used as weapons, dropping explosives on the battlefield. Often being mistreated so their tears could be used to heal wounded soldiers. As ghasts have long lifespans, some ghasts still remember the pain they endured.

When the Nether was set aflame, temperatures rose so high all of the water evaporated. The ghastlings could no longer fly freely, having to be carried by mature ghasts whose tears kept them hydrated. Even with their regenerative tears, ghasts became weak and sick in the inhospitable climate. Spitting fire to expel heat, yet easily able to die from their own projectiles.

The agony of the souls lost became imbedded into the soil. Shapes in the sand resembling faces of terror. The air thick with a dread which made rest impossible.
