Auditions for Bright Lights, Big City: New York were filmed for air at a later date. Potential members were brought before a panel of judges and asked a series of questions to determine whether they were interesting enough to join the cast. These questions included their childhood, plans for the future, and thoughts on relationships.

"Rachel Berry, they're ready for you." She stood up, brushed the dust from her pants, and headed into the room.
"Miss Berry, it's so nice to meet you! I have to admit, not many people sent in video of them singing and dancing on a bar coyote ugly style. You're kind of ballsy."
"Well, if there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that if you want to make an impression, you've got to have guts." She laughed softly, tucking her hair behind her ear.
"Well, let's get started shall we?" Rachel sat down in the chair provided, her eyes moving to each of the four professionals seated in front of her. "Why don't we start easy? Tell us about where you're from."
"I'm a New Yorker to the bone actually. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, and I never really left. This is my home. I don't think I could live anywhere else to be honest. I'd miss the noise and the lights; the city is alive, you know?" Her eyes lit up when she talked about New York "It never stops, and I wouldn't want it to."
"What do think would make you interesting to watch on TV?" Rachel paused for a moment, chewing her bottom lip.
"I'll be really honest here; I'm a bit of a diva, and I can be really dramatic. See, I want to be on Broadway with my name in lights, and I've spent my entire life working toward that goal. I'm going to be a star! I think Broadway is sort of under appreciated. Or maybe misunderstood. People think that's its this pretentious world of snobs and that its boring. I think I could prove them wrong."
"That's an interesting perspective." Rachel wasn't sure whether he was just patronizing her or not, considering the way two of the producers were scribbling notes on their pads. "You seem so dedicated to this path; has there been much success for you or what?"
"Well, I go to auditions all the time, and I was in the ensemble of a couple of Off Broadways things that didn't do very well. But so far, the spotlight has eluded me."
"Ok so we've talked about NYC and your career, but what we want to know is about you personally. If you could change one thing in your life what would it be?"
"I made a huge mistake, one I'll probably forgive myself for, and if I could make that go away I would." She didn't want to think about Brody Weston and his lies; she'd spent the last few years trying to ignore it and keep it hidden.
"Sounds like that mistake was a guy? Care to tell?" She shook her head. "Then I take it you don't believe in true love or fate? What about the idea that there is someone out there for everyone?"
"I used to believe in those things, but I've learned that they're a fairy tale. It's a very nice fairy tale, and I wish I could believe it. But maybe there isn't always a happy ending for everyone. Maybe some of us are just meant to be alone." Tears sparkled in the petite woman's eyes. "I know it sounds cynical, but I'm not sure I'm meant to have that happy ending at all."
"Wow." The producer made a quick note, and when he looked up Rachel shifted nervously in her seat. "So one last question. You have one day left on earth, what do you do?"
She drew in a breath, not giving the question more than five seconds of thought. Her voice was smooth and clear, and she met each producer's gaze with determined eyes.
"Sing, until my heart stopped beating and there wasn't a breath left in my body." She swallowed thickly, there was only one possible response. "I would sing."
