We affectionately call this museum the Blacksonian.

But today the calming sound of the waterfall drew me in and it was itself a powerful and calming symbol for me after a two-hour walk through the museum.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will open its latest exhibition, “Spirit in the Dark: Religion in Black Music, Activism, and Popular Culture,” Nov. 18. Through never-before-seen objects from the museum’s permanent collection, alongside rare photographs and stories featured in Ebony and Jet magazines, the exhibition explores ways in which religion is a part of the cultural fabric of the African American experience. “Spirit in the Dark” will be on view in the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts (CAAMA) gallery until November 2023. 

“For decades, Ebony and Jet documented stories of Black celebrity, fashion, and the Civil Rights Movement and provided an opportunity for African Americans to see an authentic public representation of themselves while also offering the world a fuller view of the African American experience," said Kevin Young, the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. 

Tickets are free and will be available on the museum's website starting July 22, 2022. 

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) has released its second online exhibition, “Making a Way Out of No Way,” on its new Searchable Museum website at searchablemuseum.com. “Making a Way Out of No Way” is the latest inaugural museum exhibition to be digitized and conceptualized for online audiences. For the first time, visitors to the Searchable Museum website can experience the exhibition online. The exhibition, which is a part of the museum’s Community Galleries, examines the various ways African Americans have navigated and resisted racism and discrimination while seeking the freedom to determine their own lives and serve their communities. It explores six main themes: An Enterprising Spirit, Organizing for Success, A Tradition of Activism, Foundations of Faith, Power of the Press and The Value of Education.
