Silver summoned a faint smile in response and repressed a wince when Muldoon carefully patted his leg dry. When Silverās hand immediately went to the peg, Muldoon batted it away.
āYou have to let it air, mate. Stay here and rest for the night, all right?ā he said, laying his hand right over Silverās knee.
The contact with the bare, unharmed skin made Silver pause in his movements, paralyzed by a not altogether unpleasant discomfort. Muldoon had cleaned his stump once or twice before, but a touch there was muted, and often uncomfortable when not painful. Silver realized this was the first time another person offered a lingering touch skin to skin in a long time, and he chose to attribute to such an unexpected act the halting of his breath and the acceleration of his heartbeat.

It was behind the bar, as Idelle felt ready to start her next shift, that she spotted a lonely man finishing a glass of expensive whiskey. His dark coat and jewellery spoke of big prizes, his poise signalled he remained more than sober enough not to become a nuisance or a danger, and the splash of unruly red hair falling into his eyes above a well-maintained beard and moustache made him easier on the eyes than three-quarters of the clientele.
Idelle was too new to the place to know the regulars, especially those men who came and went to the sea for long periods before their eager return to the comforts of the shore, so she didnāt find any concerning meaning in the fact that she couldnāt remember him passing through before. She only saw a potential client and she stood in attention, almost as if she was looking at a comically drawn bag of gold coins instead of at a man āalbeit, that is, one with a more appealing package than most around him.
