For any who haven’t visited the part of the world I live in, and/or haven’t seen images and video of this bird, this is an EMU. (It is a native of the land mass that was called Australia after colonisation. Everyone might know about emus but I try to avoid assuming, and presuming as little as my self-awareness allows)..... They are gregarious birdies and can get on well with humans but - check out the beak and feet. These dudes are not to be messed with. Though it’s small, there is a mortality rate! They attack/defend by “eviscerating”. I was lucky to live close to a wildlife reserve - #blackbuttreserve (Newcastle) - years ago and enjoying walking along their enclosure, which often meant they would walk along with me. Named after Eucalyptus pilularis, the Blackbutt tree, bushwalkers can take any of nine trails in this nature-filled reserve. The popular walks include the 1.5-kilometer Rainforest Walk, which passes by a natural creek and a gully, as well as the 1.6-kilometer Forest Way Walk, which gives walkers a unique viewpoint of the entire reserve, passing through both wet and dry forests.
