Sundance’s name is a homage to his mother despite his ironic relationship with her(he kind of hates her).

he had 2 siblings. A sapling and a sprout. The sprout died at 3 moons due to sickness. Sundance and his brother the sapling made it to 6 months, but his father and the sapling were killed by “a cannibal”(it was a Jaguar) he was named Sundance by his father before he died. His mother’s name is Raindance and all of their kids have names in reference to the sun or weather (Sundance’s older brother is named Soleil) his father’s name was Barack meaning (lightning)

His mother is very conservative, she neglected and borderline abused him growing up while his father who was only occasionally around (he’d be away for months at a time in a patrol trying to fight for resources) taught him to have self worth and valued all of his kits equally. His father was also small like him. His father was trans and his brother served as a surrogate. Raindance wasn’t shocked when Sundance turned out to be trans too but disappointed.

Naming usually depends on the village the cats live in. Sometimes it’s like warriors, like Sundance or Vinewick or Whirlpool, but it can also be phrases, two words, or normal names. Macaw’s Plume, Barack, Soleil, Irid, Jaguar’s tooth, Sweeping Gull, etc.

For a some villages, cats don’t get a name until they’re 6 moons old. This is a direct result of the Black Tyrant’s hold of resources. Kittens don’t often make it to 6 moons. So a name is withheld to save the grief. Instead kittens are categorized by their likeliness of a survival. Seedlings, Sprouts, and saplings.

A seedling is one that's not likely to survive past 6 months. A sprout is 50/50. And a Sapling is one that is assumed guaranteed to survive, the biggest and healthiest.

seedlings are often ignored. parents dont want to grow attached to the one they think is going to die the soonest, so theyre often neglected and in a way it contributes to their premature deaths. If they get sick theyre not helped. No one really cares about what they do - they can skip class or whatever. They're often fed rations too because theyre already small and weak.

seedlings are a rare occurance, like a runt but worse off. if theyre disabled or have a birth defect theyre called seedlings too. Unfortunately, ableism is prominent in some but not all villages and clans.

Sundance was a seedling, and the only surviving member of his litter. (He’s very small, if you didn’t notice.)
