“Black Jester”, A Poem For Kind People In An Unkind World

I tell jokes to hide a sad soul

I laugh to hide a crying child

I listen so no one else is alone

I wear bright colors to distract from red-rimmed eyes

I am kind because I don’t want others to suffer

I teach so others may learn from my mistakes

I lie so no one else need feel my sadness

I help so no one else need be like me

BlackJester is basically a walking energon tank. On Earth and peace time Cybertron he shares the joy of beer or Energy with anyone he deems "Not a complete faggot."

During the war he was considered a member of the Medibots bringing emergency energon boost to weary soldiers on their last legs. The Jester is fast, light, and agile, making it possible for him to move quickly from one station to the next while taking minimal damage even under heavy fire. Unfortunately this also means he isn't built to take a lot of punishment, but what he lacks in bulk he makes up for in speed, scrappiness, and sheer determination. Also his hammer. Not only a weapon but an auxiliary energon tank, the inner mechanisms of which allow it to produce small and controlled energon explosions upon impact. A function the will over time, although very slowly, deplete his supply and must be used wisely in more dire situations.

Bred and owned by Jack B. Joel and trained by Joel's private trainer, Charles Morton, Humorist was sired by 5 time leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland Polymelus, a son of 1899 Ascot Gold Cup winner Cyllene. Jest won the 1,000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks in 1913, and was a half sister to the great 1914 St Leger winner Black Jester.

Humorist raced 7 times, and finished never out of the money.

As a two-year-old he started 5 times, won 3 and placed 2 times. His debut cam in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, which he won by a neck. He then would head to Ascot, but missed it, due to a bout of coughing. He returned to Doncaster, where he was was beaten by a neck in the Champagne Stakes by Lemonora. Before he was sent to Newmarket, he impressively won the Buckenham Stakes and Clearwell Stakes. In Newmarket he was defeated by a neck for the second (and last) time by Monarch in the Middle Park Stakes. 

The following year, 1921, he made his three-year-old debut in the 2,000 Guineas Stakes, whithout a trial race. Leading most of the way, he "tired abruply" and finished third behind Craig An Eran and Lemonora. Back at Epsom for the Derby, starting as the 6-1 second favourite, Humorist led the last two furlongs and held of the 5-1 favourite Craig An Eran in a "battle royal" to win by a neck. However, after the race he seemed distressed and unsteady and had to spend the night at Epsom before he was well enough to return to Letcombe Bassett.

Being prepared for Ascot, he began to bleed from his nosetrils, and the decision to rest him was made.

In late June artist Alfred Munnings painted Humorist. Some hours later, Humorist was found dead in a "pool of blood" in his stable. An autopsy revealed that the he had been suffering from chronic tuberculosis, which would have affected him for many months before his death. He had effectively been running on one lung.

He was buried near St Albans, at Joel's Childwick Bury Stud. Steve Donoghue, Humorist's jockey said: "He gave me everything he had when it must have been agony for him. No Horse ever showed greater courage."

Black Jester

Born in the United Kingdom in 1911, he was sired by 5 time leading sire Polymelus, out of Absurdity.

In a career that leasted from 1913 until October 1915, Black Jester won 9 races from 23 starts, placed second 6 times, and third once. He was one of the leading two-year old in 1913, when he won both the Molecomb Stakes and Richmon Stakes. As a three-year old, he ran third in the 2,000 Guineas, was unplaced in the Epsom Derby. But he went on to win the Sussex Stakes and St Leger Stakes, both in September.   At age four, in 1915, he won the City and Suburban Handicap(pictured) and the June Stakes(a wartime substitute for the Coronation Cup). He became increasingly difficult to train and at the end of the season he was retired to stud where he became a successful sire of broodmares.

He died in June 1928.
