v*caloid as a subculture was never about the music. if you try to analyze v*caloid songs from a music theory perspective or even just the perspective of someone who likes music without emotional attachment to the v*caloid subculture. youre gonna realize v*caloid music sucks. what good producers there are generally abandon the subculture after a little while (wowaka, hachi/kenshi yonezu, more contemporary examples of konnichiwa tanita-san/tatsuya kitani and uki3/kamiyama yoh). what remains are either producers who wouldnt be able to make it anywhere else (kairiki bear [whose music is not good or marketable], to a lesser extent pinocchio-p [whose music is enjoyable but not marketable outside of a subculture]) and producers who have a really strong attachment to the subculture (deco*27, though i should specify his music is marketable, not good).
when people talk about how v*caloid is dying what this means is that what made the subculture important to them is no longer there. which happens. subcultures change and v*caloid has changed a lot over the years. hachi writing suna no wakusei with the idea that v*caloid is now dead to him isnt really a statement on the activity of the subculture but the remaining sentimentality hachi had towards it. what made the subculture important to him isnt there anymore so its dead to him. theres a reason k*gepro (which isnt well written or well marketed) got a huge following within v*caloid and its because its a story locked within a specific mindset youll really only find with v*caloid fans, and is about the feeling of being a v*caloid fan.
mikus explosive popularity wasnt bc shes a particularly good instrument. its because she became a way for indie artists to express themselves without much equipment and with a gimmick that let their content spread without a label or manager or producer. shes a pop culture icon not a musical masterpiece. shes a way for anyone to express themselves without needing to bring other people in. which is why vocaloid is known for its heavy subject matter. because its a bunch of hikineets locking themselves in their room and writing word vomit.
i wrote this post bc those guys being obnoxious abt utsu-p being some kind of musical genius. hes a mid-tier metal producer who has some pop influences. that tricked a lot of people into thinking he was particularly good. bc its screamo thats listenable to the average person.
BOKUROO WEEK 202O
Day 1: Confessions || Flower/Tattoo Shop Au
āThat came out wrongā
It was a single rose, red with passion, full of love. It was a gift, a confession, a sign of affection. The red rose was given to Kuroo with such a gentle gesture, the contrast to the giver made his heart beat faster.
Now, Bokuto was nervous, the first he had been in a while. Giving the rose to Kuroo took him weeks of building self confidence and annoying Konoha, but finally the time came. With the rose being happily received, he finally opened his mouth and spoke, āI think... I think you love me...ā
Kurooās eyes widened, his face slowly matching shades with his gift. It took Bokuto a while until he realized this reaction was because of him. Quickly, thinking about what he said Bo realized and suddenly blurt out āTHAT CAME OUT WRONG!!ā With flustered movements and equally reddening face, Bo grabs Kurooās hands and repeats āWHAT I MEANT TO SAY IS- I think I love you... Will you go out with me??ā
Immediately he drops Kurooās hands, his own hand nervously reaching towards the back of his neck. Freaking out, he thinks of stupid thoughts and starts to shift slightly. Out of his awkwardness and slow nervous breakdown he heard a snicker. It was small and then suddenly grew, loud and happy, he looked up and saw Kuroo was laughing. Feeling better Bokuto started to laugh with him. After the burst of laughter Kuroo looked at Bokuto in the eyes and spoke in response āYeah, Iād love to.ā
