Bill Kreutzmann Grateful to be 75 - and Still Dead

Bill Kreutzmann is still Dead as he celebrates his 75th long, strange trip around the sun.

The former Grateful Dead and current Dead & Company drummer was born May 7, 1946, and was anchoring the Warlocks by the time he turned 19. That band became the Grateful Dead and “Bill the Drummer” played every show from 1965-1995.

Alongside Mickey Hart, who joined, left and rejoined the Gratefuls, Kreutzmann was one-half of the Rhythm Devils, who recorded music for “Apocalypse Now,” played a nightly drum duet with the Dead over the last half of their career and later formed a band under the Rhythm Devils banner.

Though he hightailed it to Hawaii upon Jerry Garcia’s death and skipped his surviving bandmates’ initial reunions, Kreutzmann’s been in most of the post-Grateful, Dead spin-offs - The Other Ones, the Dead, Fare Thee Well, Dead & Company - and had a few bands of his own - BK3, the Trichromes and Billy & the Kids, who kick off a series of three nights of livestreams tonight.

But he’s been Dead for most of his life. And Dead begins at 75.
