Swiss mechanical watches were kings from their inception. The mechanical watch industry had its boom in the first half of the 19th century. Big brands like Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet or IWC were created between 1800 and 1900.

There were brands created in previous years, like Vacheron Constantin, or later, like Rolex. The industry was growing successfully and new brands were joining them, until the second half of the 20th century arrived.

Japan began to develop quartz movements, which were much cheaper and easier to manufacture, as well as being more accurate than European mechanical watches. The industry that had been so successful began to falter, it could be the end of the mechanical watch.

Faced with this problem, it was Jean-Claude Biver (spokesperson of the crisis team) who knew how to turn this crisis around. If we realize, this crisis did have an initial stage, which was when Japan began to manufacture watches more accurate and cheaper than the Swiss, and had its critical phase when sales of mechanical watches began to decline.

Since then, the mechanical watch industry has reinvented itself with the arrival of disruptive models (like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in the 70s) and a focus more on status, not functionality. In this way, the mechanical watch industry was reborn and is stronger than ever.
