The Zouaves were used on the front lines of WWI and suffered heavy casualties in France while still being under colonial oppression at home. Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) one of the most eminent human rights leaders of the 19th century. He escaped from slavery and became a leader in the abolishment movement. Frederick Douglass became the first black citizen to hold high rank in the U.S. government and served under 5 U.S presidents.
