The Four Profound Weaves by R.B. Lemberg is such a bite sized novella that telling much of the story would give it all away. The universe however is big. Lemberg created the Birdverse, a queer fantasy universe named for its bird deity. And this is the first book in print set in the Birdverse.
There are plenty of other poems and stories in the same universe, but this was my first dip into it. And I liked it a lot. The weaving, the magic, the eerie old lady, the bones, the sand, the wind and the songs. All delicious.
This is also profoundly a story of family, in all its different iterations. And I thought Lemberg did very well in explaining big subjects in a small space. Neat, sweet, and a little bit salty (and sandy). I love it. I've already picked up the next Birdverse novella.
(I am not a weaver, especially a magical one. The weaved circle was made by my mum, definitely magical.)
