Surprise visitors to the Salish Sea! Bellingham photographer Eric Ellingson found a flock of 55 American White Pelicans yesterday in Birch Bay near the Canadian border. This species is noted as “rare” in our region by wabirders. These large, gregarious birds often travel and forage in large flocks, sometimes traveling long distances in V-formations. They forage by swimming on the surface, dipping their bills to scoop up fish, then raising their bills to drain water and swallow their prey.
