The books make canon scenes that had weird phrasing and confused me because “why would they say that”

Well, something I've talked about before is that a lot of how Sora acts at the end of KH3-- screaming about if he's alone then he's worthless- like, this comes on the tail end of his first experiences with the universe after losing Ven. After losing Xion, even if he's not aware of that.

These are three people who have been in his heart for minimum a year, who are so tightly bound to him in a very metaphysical sense that like, you can toss forward theories like "rage form is Sora taking their pain and dishing it out against the universe" and that's a solid theory. So when it comes to how they reacted, how they felt?

Empty. The moment it happened, it wasn't a snap. It wasn't a tear. He was there and then he was gone. A hollow, where Sora's presence always was. And they didn't get forewarning, they didn't have time to prepare.

Suddenly something intrinsic to them is missing and I think, at the least, Ventus and Xion collapsed into tears. I think Roxas would've started screaming. I think he would've snapped.

Where is my Somebody, snapped. Scorched earth snapped. Because it's easier to be angry than it is to collapse.

Who would confess?

Ooooh tough question.

I think Roxas would realize he's in love first. Because he's a lot more keyed into recognizing when something is different, when he can't identify what's going on with himself. So he'd talk to Xion about it, ask Axel. Like he would treat his feelings like something to investigate and the revelation that he adores Sora, that it's kind of natural to always want to be around someone, to not be able to picture a future without them, to want to keep them safe and near and see them smile is... well, that's love?

Yeah, he'd figure that out first.

Sora would be the one to confess. Probably several months later after the most random of moments makes him realize OH MY GOD I'M IN LOVE AREN'T I? Probably when he's hanging out with Kairi so she can laugh at him and be like "yes? yes. I thought we'd covered this months ago but yes you are, silly boy."

He'd be a giant ball of nerves about it too, but after he figures himself out it really wouldn't take long for a confession to happen. He probably makes an attempt at a plan before just blurting it out and making them both freeze up and stare at each other like deers in the headlights for a solid minute.

But the smile that Roxas gives him, once the words sink in?

Roxas loathes Anti. Hates it. Has experienced what happens to Sora's heart on the inside to create it and he is angry it exists, even if he understands why. Rage he hates too... until he finds out it's fueled by his own pain. It's Sora-- dishing out his pain, back to the world. That's conflicting, but in the end, there'd be... something almost. Satisfying. Flattering. About that.

Ven would be desperate to understand both and also, going with that theme of Rage being motivated by his pain? Frantic to sort of wave off his own hurt. He's fine he's fine there's nothing to dish back to the world he's fine he's here for Sora he's here to make Sora feel better.

Xion understands both maybe a little too well. She doesn't question them, really- they're facets of Sora. They're his pain, and their pain. She gets that he's been through a lot, and people who've been through a lot aren't... normal, like others want them to be.
