Taping down plates so they don't fly off at high speeds. We do this so we can quickly mix our samples with the antibodies in the wells of the plate. 3. FIELD ā¢ I am a PhD student looking at a type of breast cancer called HER2-positive. This means the cancer cells express a molecule called HER2, and they use this molecule to grow out of control and form a tumour. ā¢ The good news is there are a few drugs that can directly target the HER2 molecule and stop it making the cells grow out of control. These drugs are better because they can target the cancer cells more specifically than conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy. ā¢ Unfortunately, lots of cancers are able to become resistant to the targeted drugs, and then continue to grow and progress. My research is trying to find out exactly how the cancer cells are finding ways around the drugs we're using, and how we can better target the cancers with different drug combinations. ā¢ I use lots of techniques to find out how they're doing this, some of which are pictured above. They mostly include cell culture, staining techniques like immunohistochemistry, and western blotting. ā¢ For the whole of March, @theSTEMsquad will be taking part in a challenge to let people see what real living scientists do everyday.
