Landfills emit almost 50,00,00,00,000 kg of methane every year. And with the energy crisis, it sounds like a brilliant idea to turn some of the MSW into energy. This way, we kill two birds with one stone. Less waste and another renewable source of energy thatтАЩs economically viable and environmentally sustainable! For converting waste to energy (WTE), our options are incineration (combustion of MSW), pyrolysis (thermal decomposition), gasification(using limited amounts of air/oxygen to convert MSW into syngas), Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF: producing fuel from MSW by shredding, screening, and classifying), and biomethanation/anaerobic digestion (source-segregating wet waste and converting the organic material in MSW to biogas in the absence of oxygen). With all the urban and industrial solid waste, we could generate up to 5690 MW of energy!
