Palm oil is a vital commodity to the economy of Indonesia. The area of oil palm plantations in Indonesia has increased from year to year. However, the effectiveness of palm oil production is reduced by pest infestation. One of the pest which often infests oil palm plantations is nettle caterpillar. The pest control used in this study is biological control, viz. biological agents given to oil palm trees. This paper describes a mathematical model of two infectious diseases in nettle caterpillar population. The two infectious diseases arise due to two biological agents, namely Bacillus thuringiensis bacterium and parasite which usually attack nettle caterpillars. The derivation of the model constructed in this paper is obtained from ordinary differential equations without time delay. The equilibrium points are analyzed. Two of three equilibrium points are stable if the Routh-Hurwitz criteria are fulfilled. In addition, this paper also presents the numerical simulation of the model which has been constructed.

I went to BEER (International Symposium on Biomathematics and Ecology: Education and Research... yes they picked the name on purpose and yes there is free beer during the social get-together) this weekend and presented a poster on some of my latest research. Probably more importantly, it’s the first conference I’ve gone to that’s solely for biomathematics and, although I had just spent about seen hours catching and sitting on trains, I immediately felt like I had found some of my people and got excited about being there.
After taking the train back today though, I’m exhausted. It’s a good exhausted because it was a good weekend, but I have a topology midterm on Wednesday with homework due and I’m never ready for topology. This subject is just kicking me in the face all the time.
There’s so much going on with my own students on top of it and then learning that a professor with a terrible reputation bullied his way into teaching a course I have to take next semester was just the last thing I needed. I’m going to be so dead tired by the time December comes and yet somehow I’m supposed to prelim in January.
Meanwhile, I have a nagging thing I need to do and it’s not getting done. It’s completely unrelated to school and I just wish I had about a month of free time to be able to complete it. Maybe I’ll really work on it after prelims.
