Lena Luthor Headcanon #22b
Once Lena's funeral details are finalized, she crams the forms in a folder, sends copies to her attorney, then promptly puts it from her mind. Even as her life begins to open, starting with Kara Danvers, she doesn't update those details for years and years, until one day, long after she and Kara have moved in together and started talking about marriage, Kara finds the folder.
She reads everything, and is horrified, but also angry. So, so angry. That Lena never shared this with her, that Lena still feels that her life still means so little, even to the people who care about her. That night she storms off in a huff, and when she eventually returns they don't discuss it again... Until one day Lena drops a new folder in Kara's lap.
Kara carefully leafs through it, but her confusion only grows the further she reads. "You... bought a park?"
Lena nods. "But that's not the important part." She reaches over and plucks a leaflet from the bottom of the folder. "This is."
Scanning the printed words, Kara struggles to make sense of it as Lena continues.
"I chose the funeral plans you found before I had anyone to care about where I was laid to rest. It was never important to me-- I'd be too dead to care. So I chose what was easy."
Kara stares at the green leaves printed all over the pamphlet, tears filling her eyes until they blurred into a wash of vertigree. She tore her gaze up, and met Lena's gaze.
"I didn't think about what it meant to you-- that you might have a century more to spend without me." Slender fingers trace the leaflet gripped tightly in Kara's hand. "This service converts a decedent's ashes into a bio urn-- when its planted, the ashes mix with the roots and become part of the tree. When I die, the park will open a memorial grove. Or maybe they'll just plant it unofficially. I don't know. The point is... you'll have something living to visit, if you want."
Tears pour down Kara's cheeks as she flings her arms around Lena's neck. They've never talked about what a Kryptonian will face as their loved ones begin to die. That barring a premature demise at the hands of an enemy, Earth's yellow sun would curse a Kryptonian to a long, lonely life after all their human family had passed.
Lena holds Kara as she sobs. She doesn't tell her what else the folder documents-- a memorial fund, set aside to cover the expenses of anyone else who wanted to be interred the same way, at the behest of both the decedent and Kara herself. Enough for their closest friends, and more besides, for whatever family Kara found after they were all long gone.
She doesn't say that she hopes that one day, the memorial grove will grow as thick and dense as a forest, filled to bursting with the lives Kara has changed for the better.
