sorry for a political ask but since you talked about it, i've tried to wrap my head around what's been going on but the only english info i found was from BBC and they didn't say much either

I'd say don't get me started but... since you asked

in short - we have a centrist party (D66) who won the last election (only *just* beating the fascist (PVV) - they have the same number of seats, the centrists just had a bit more votes - down to a few thousand iirc), Christian democrats (CDA), and so called liberals (VVD). The last party is the party that's been in charge in some way for the past 15 or so years and the cause of MANY of the problems we have today (their former leader is Mark Rutte who is now the head of fucking NATO and apparently a trump whisperer) but their voters are very loyal so they keep being a big player in negotiations... unfortunately. These 3 parties only have 66 seats in parliament together and since they need 76 for a majority, they need to "shop around" with every law they want to pass to get enough support from other parties.

We could have had a more left wing government because D66 and CDA were at least willing to talk with the labour/greens party and see if they could make things work, but Dilan FUCKING Yesilgöz, leader of VVD, kept refusing to even talk to them and basically threw temper tantrums until she got her way.

But anyways their plans include huge budget cuts on healthcare, unemployment benefits cut in half (you can get it for max two years now, but that goes down to 1), with health insurance everyone has to pay all costs up to 385 euro a year themselves now - that goes UP to 460 euro a year. They're raising the income tax to pay for the 19 billion for the military - "an investment in freedom"

people who have officially been granted asylum now get to jump the line to get a house/apartment because they're usually housed in shitty hastily thrown together 'shelters' (like empty office buildings they threw a few beds in) and the wait for a rental in the lowest price range can be up to 9 years in some places. And letting these people jump the line doesn't actually matter that much wait time wise, but this lovely government that's going to "make things better for everyone!" is going to legally officially BY LAW block these people from being first in line for a place to live. Meaning they'll have to stay in the shitty revamped office buildings for 9 years (or longer) while the people who live near them don't want them there because "they" all rape "our women and girls"

they want to build an "AI factory", open another airport for civilian air travel, and tax benefits for the rich stay exactly the way they are.

But hey - kids are getting free fruit at school now and they got rid of the budget cuts on education! (🙄)

Politics in this country has been a huge shit show for years. I think the past 15-20 years, only two or three governments have served the full term.

It could be worse, we've had worse... but this whole thing is just a massive fuck you to everyone that doesn't have a couple of grand a month to spare.

But the internet goes nuts over "the Netherlands electing their first openly gay president" which... isn't even true. The dude is gay and he's the leader of the biggest party so he'll (likely) become prime minister... but one of the reasons *why* his party won the election is because he was on a popular quiz show during campaign time (one where the winner stays on) and he was making "I hate my wife husband" type of jokes and talking about his wedding and how his husband mocks his accent in Spanish (he's married to an Argentinian field hockey - i think- player) and half the country fell in love with him because he's such "a nice and down to earth guy" - and then voted for his party.

His name is Rob Jetten - I think the tiktok kiddies still ship him with Jesse Klaver, leader of the labour/greens party 🤦‍♀️
