Bigbug (2022)
Monique from "BigBug"
(Claude Perron)
Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "BigBug"...
From what I've seen, it feels like a cheery, pastel-colored, mildly erotic and very openly Nouvelle Vague Française version of Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. You could also say it's also I, Robot, with less of Asimov's keen insight into personal ethics - and even less Will Smith and Alan Tudyk.
Imagine AM packing RoboCop's body and the face of a sixtysomething Franco-Algerian actor with a ridiculous set of fake grills, reducing his five prisoners to circus rounds. Imagine celebrated French actors pulling sea lion barks and their best lion roars while French RoboCop lashes a neon-blue CGI whip at them.
You'll probably have some tolerance for it, like I do, if you fell head over heels for The City of Lost Children or if you're in the Franco circuit and actually liked Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre. There's a lot of returning actors in there.
I'm liking it well enough, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. "Robots declaring themselves our new overlords" is nothing new, and Netflix's own Love, Death and Robots did a bit of a better job at it, with less self-aggrandizement.

I am going to have so many nightmares with this creepy face.
Bigbug
directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2022
Well this is the weirdest movie I have ever watched. Not awful, just weird.
