There’s a book called What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality by Daniel A. Helminiak.

You can guess from the title what it’s about... There’s a section in the book discussing Daniel and what eunuchs were in the past. For example, eunuchs were sometimes considered a third gender due to the fluidity of what a man could be considered during that time. And of course, there’s the implication that if a king had a large harem of eunuchs, it often suggested the king liked men. For instance, sultans like Muhammad al-Amin had male harems, and it was so obvious that al-Amin’s mother had female suitors dress as men in the hopes that al-Amin would show interest.

Back to Daniel: in the book, the author points out a specific word in the latin version of the story of Bel and the Dragon. The text says Daniel was the king’s favorite companion. While the word “companion” means “friend,” culturally, it could mean something more than that. Of course, this doesn’t mean that if Roman men called themselves “companions” they were always romantically involved, but it is oddly specific that the Latin text uses that particular word. Considering Daniel was a eunuch and the king’s favorite “roommate,” it does seem pretty suspicious.

That said, I’d take Helminiak’s interpretation with a grain of salt since they didn’t provide any sources. Still, I really like the idea... 👀
