Gravel crunched under his feet as James made his way along Nathan Road. Something had called him to leave the apartment, to leave the safety of inside. Something was here. Something beyond him and the monsters that seemed to loom around every corner. He could hear them, shuffling and crunching against the underside of cars, against the cracked asphalt that somehow remained after all these years. There was another person out there. Another person in the town that was living. That was breathing. It wasn't Angela, or Eddie, and it wasn't Laura either. He hadn't seen her for quite some time now, which was kind of a shame. He hoped she was okay. She didn't deserve to be in a place like this.
With people like him.
Sunderland stalked his way through the empty streets, rifle in hand and radio turned on. His eyes and ears were primed for anything out of the ordinary. Anything he hadn't witnessed in his time here. Any sign of life that he could practically FEEL waiting out in the fog.
The smell of gasoline. A car? None of the cars here had moved for a long time. Could it be true? Could there actually be someone else here with him in Silent Hill? He broke into a jog, holding onto his rifle a little tighter just in case there was trouble. No signs of static yet. This was a good sign. This had to be.
' ... looking for- ... friend, Mary.'
James heart stopped. Mary? Someone else was looking for Mary? They knew she was here? Did they also get a letter? But that voice. Somehow... somehow he knew that voice. Who was it?
"... Hello?" James dared to call out, hoping beyond all hope that it wasn't just another trick the town was playing on him. Timidly, he pressed forward, hoping to catch a glimpse.
'I'll be just a second!'
A response. A honest to god response. A human. A life! Sunderland felt his heart leap into his throat, and despite what the other said he pressed on. A woman. It was a woman. A woman he knew. Who else did he know besides Mary? Who knew her when she was alive? In his mind's eye, bright red hair. He could see her bright blue eyes. A name touched his lips.
The car was empty when he arrived. Nothing. No one. He searched, fruitlessly, for several minutes in the hopes that maybe she had just moved around the car. Nothing. No one. Upon this realization, James found himself shaking. His riffle clattered from his hands, sliding across the pavement as he curled into the wreckage, fists slamming hard onto the frame of the car. So close. He had been so close. Why was the town doing this to him? Why now?
Tears fell from James' eyes. All he had wanted was to talk to her. Was to know if she knew where Mary was. As he wept, he opened his eyes to stare hopelessly in the space where perhaps a body had been. A glint in the soft light caught his eye. Something left behind? Sniffling, he reached down and on the driver's seat of the car James found a golden chain. A necklace. A cross.
The name was now clear. The face now understood.
Dana Scully.

IT'S OKAY, @beyondthescully, WE DO THIS ALL THE TIME.
geraldine had always been such a good kid. smart, clever, and polite; just shy enough not to get up to mischief, not so meek as to let herself be bullied. chas thought he'd stopped worrying about getting called to the office a long, long time ago.
the thing is, he'd never factored in the far more likely possibility that he'd eventually, inevitably, get that call for john.
not that the asshole actually called him, no, perish the thought. he'd just texted, and right while chas was zonked out on the couch after a six hour shift and some sparring with river spirits besides. so now he's here three hours late, with only one shoe tied and his hair sticking half-up, because his stupid friend got himself tied up with the friggin' fbi, somehow. knowing john, they'd give him the electric chair just for a few hours of peace and quiet.
it's on his third round trip to a basement floor that's starting to look frustratingly familiar when he finally tamps down on his pride and gingerly raps his knuckles on the door of some office or other, the apologetic weight of his hunched shoulders drawing him under the frame as sure as any bent back would. " hey, uh — sorry to interrupt. i'm looking for someone, and i think i just keep getting more lost the longer i try to find them. do you know where i'd find an agent, uh . . . ' he squints at the phone. ' . . . agent scullivan, anywhere? '
