âBreak my heart once more, I dare you.â
Despite everything, she walked down the street. She just had to do one more thing in this town before she left. Once she was gone, she was going to be gone for good. And this goddamn heartache might begin to go away.Â
Initially, most people in the town seemed to ignore her. They had too much else going on to notice anybody at all, really. That was one of the few saviors of towns like this. As soon as she crossed the threshold to the nicer part of town, she felt eyes on her. Not too many. A few cautionary glances. Curious looks. She walked with her head held high. Walk with purpose and they wonât question you, she thought. Besides. She had a good reason. The shop stood proudly on the corner. A wooden sign stuck out slightly on to the street, hanging by a short chain. As she walked under it, the tiefling couldnât help but to do a small hop to smack it slightly. It creaked as it swung. She walked into the shop. The shopkeep, an elderly half-elven woman turned her head slightly from the customer she was helping and smiled at her. âHello! I will be right with you.âThe tiefling nodded. She crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. It was one of the few spaces in the shop she could do that. Almost all other parts were shelves of some kind. There were rainbows of books kept in neat rows. Behind the counter there were careful slots that were stocked with a whole variety of things. Arrows that were fletched with different feathers. Bow strings. Polish and oils for weapons, mostly for ornamental reasons. Once the shopkeeper finished up with the customer, the teifling walked up to the counter. âHello, Renestrae,â she greeted. âI retrieved the thing for you.â Renestraeâs eyes lit up. âYou got it back?âÂ
The tiefling nodded. âI got all of it back.â Out of her satchel, she produced two leather bound books. The covers were decently new, with hardly a scratch on them. However, when Renestrae reached out to turn the slightly yellowed pages, they cracked. âI canât believe it.â She looked at the tiefling. âHow did you get these from my ex-husband?â She smiled wryly. âI have my ways.â âWell, it must have been easy with the--â âIâm not with them anymore.â The tiefling cut her off swiftly. The half-elf blinked. âOh. My apologies.â She shook her head. âDonât worry about it.â âSo, does that mean you...â âWe broke up, yeah.â She cleared her throat. âNot to sound greedy, but can I have my payment now?â âOf course, of course.â Any air of pleasant conversation had died. Just like that, the tiefling had found out how to evoke the feeling she was feeling inside on the world outside. And it sucked. The half-elven woman placed a small pouch of coin on the table. âHere you go. Good luck out there.â The tielfing took it and slipped it into her pouch. She gave one last smile. âThank you. I think Iâll need it.â Without anything else, she turned and left the shop. Once she was out, she walked to the edge of town. She walked in the direct opposite direction of her party - her friends. Each step felt like the wound in her heart was growing. But she had to do this. Later, she turned around to see the last of the town on the horizon. The further she got away, the less she had a chance of going back. She knew it. But each step meant that there was less of a chance for her heart to break at his hands again.Â

46 for Mornath
46. âDance with me.â
The crowd was packed into the small house and the enthusiasm in their applause hit like rolling thunder as Mornath took Heliodoroâs hand and bowed with him before their audience. Â She felt her face fill with warmth as she watched everyone rise from their seats, still clapping. Â This was like nothing she had ever experienced before.
As they exited the stage, Mornath kept a tight grip on her friendâs hand just so that she wouldnât trip and fall over something in her overwhelmed state. Theyâd only just made it back to the dressing room when the theatre manager burst in, a big smile on her dwarven face.
âYouâve made a killing tonight, my dears!â she declared jubilantly, holding up a fat sack of coins. Mornath stopped in the midst of removing her earrings and gaped at their earnings as the dwarf tossed the bag to Heliodoro. They wouldnât need to count it to know that it was far and away more than just enough for them to eat tonight.

51. âYou make me feel alive.â
âIf a god broke you, then a god will fix you,â Mornath had told Heliodoro when she decided that lifting his curse was her new mission and so now, on their first morning in the town of Everlund, she watched him transform into a version of himself that she had never seen before, a version that seemed as if he belonged in a temple of Corellon.
The Heliodoro Mornath knew was loud, flamboyant, and didnât let anyone dictate his fashions, but when he donned the blue and silver vestments of the Order of the Protector, he became something different. For the first time, she truly saw him as the dutiful paladin he had been trained to be. It was a jarring experience, especially with him starting by taking a razor to his sideburns.
âWhat are you doing?!â she asked, alarmed, as she reached to snatch the blade from him. He gave her a bittersweet smile and raised it out of her range.
âTheyâll grow back,â he told her.

62. âDo you have a ride home?â
Cold.  Mornath felt nothing but cold as she shuffled along the side of the road.  The pouring rain had her soaked to the very bone, her heavily worn leather boots squelching unpleasantly with each step.  A lance of pain continually shot up her left shin.  She had probably fractured something when she had rolled out of the trunk of that moving car.  Served her right for getting literally roped into that situation by some rando in a red hoodie at the bar asking the question âDo you have a ride home?â
She could barely see where she was going; her glasses were cracked and covered in rain droplets and though she could feel her case in her jacket pocket with the cleaning cloth inside, it would be fruitless for her to use it, a waste of energy. Â Hell, she was having trouble just staying vertical and conscious at this point.
Eventually, she couldnât even do that. Â The pain and stiffness in her legs forced them to give out and she tumbled into the ditch between the road and the tree line with a muddy splash. Â She didnât know how much time passed before she heard a car pull up nearby. Â Her awareness was fading in and out. Â Someone picked her up and she registered dark brown eyes, a square jaw, and a purple silk tie before she completely passed out.

22. âThis isnât goodbye.â
After the dust settled in the wake of the destruction brought down on the caravan by a now beheaded giant, Heliodoro finally had a moment to breathe and take in his surroundings.
Survivors wandered about the mountain road, tending to the dead and injured or attempting salvage what was left. Â Heliodoro was covered in blood, sweat, and grime, but he didnât care. Â All he cared about in that moment was the fact that Mornath was nowhere to be found. Â He frantically went from person to person, asking if anyone had seen a half-elf in silver spectacles, but they all shook their heads.

â - happy
Yoel loves big crowds and people watching. When he was traveling with his familyâs caravan, whenever theyâd arrive at a new destination, he climb up on something and just watch for interesting people and imagine the places theyâd been to.
â„ - family
Yoel is the middle-ish child. He has five other siblings (who Iâm not going to name right now because names are hard), and of them, heâs the only one whoever wanted to leave the family trading caravan and go out on his own.
â - old age/aging
Yoel really wants to try and visit as many places, and see as many sights as possible before he gets old. Since itâs a lot more difficult to go on wild adventures when youâre old. At least as far as heâs concerned. Outside of that, he figures heâd sort of end up back with the caravan when heâs done. Heâs not really afraid of getting old, just, wants to avoid it for as long as possible.
à” - random
Yoel has a double-jointed thumbs.
