Shoulder GIRD GIRD ( Glenohumeral Internal Rotation Deficit) is a pathological condition resulting in the loss of internal rotation motion of the shoulder. It is common in athletes such as baseball pitcher's and other athletes that perform repetitive overhead activities. It is typically caused by repetitive throwing, resulting in tightness of the posterior capsule and weakness of the rotator cuff muscles. Symptoms may include: vague shoulder pain, shoulder instability, elbow pain, decreased accuracy/velocity/performance, sometimes painless. Can lead to structural damage in the shoulder and elbow if left untreated. Adequate hip internal rotation is needed during walking and running. If you lack adequate internal rotation the pelvis can’t move as far forward over the stance leg resulting in an ineffective and shortened stride. ➡️ Shortened stride inhibits glut activation and hip extension. ➡️ Inactive glutes increase the strain on the hamstrings and the low back in addition to a multitude of possible compensatory strains placed on the rest of the body. More importantly hip internal rotation is essential to performing the butterfly.
