Eating healthy can be expensive or not, it's in your hands literally! Here is the cost breakdown (from left):
Carrot sticks, 12 oz., $1.78 or 14 cents/oz.
Whole carrots, 80 oz., $2.28 or 3 cents/oz.
Carrot chips, 16 oz., $1.78 or 11 cents/oz.
Whole carrots are the better value by far but if you don't want to do a Bugs Bunny imitation chomping on a whole carrot you have to put some work into it - scrape and cut up from whole. Carrot chips run neck and neck with sticks comparing their price per ounce.
The answer is pretty clear, if you want to save money and eat healthy prepare to do food prep. Or as my sister-in-law remarked one time that if they didn't buy the precut carrots they wouldn't eat vegetables as snack at all - too true. As a further comparison, I ran the numbers which showed that a national brand of potato chips cost $2.99 for 10oz. or 29 cents per oz. So reaching for the precut carrots is still a better value than potato chips, better for your diabetic diet, too!
When I'm not doing the mental math that comes with being a good consumer, I'm sewing dog bone deep pocket aprons for my online shop ( www.etsy.com/shop/topdrawerthreads ). Or, I'm blissing out while crocheting striped scarves from recycled yarn for my other shop ( www.etsy.com/shop/topdraweryarns ). My daughter's (and friend) have an online shop, www.etsy.com/shop/yesdesigns , where they hand make and sell hemp festival jewelry, knitted picnic blankets from recycled yarn, and summer bloomers with pocket. My other daughter has an online shop, www.etsy.com/shop/shroombloombags , where she designs and crochets mushroom shaped festival bags from recycled yarn.
