A smattering of concept art by Daisuke Amaya (aka Pixel) from the development of Cave Story. The early concept for Cave Story was quite different, with Amaya having created a nearly full beta version that ended up being scrapped in favor of the final release version.Ā
Details are a bit scarce, but based on available info we know a few things about the story and the game itself.Ā
Quote was originally called Curly Brace, and Curly herself doesnāt seem to be present in the beta version. The beta version of Sue seems like she fills some of the same roles that Curly does in the final game.Ā
According to Amaya, the group shot above features Beta-Quote (Curly Brace), Beta-Sue, Misery, and a professor character who created Quote (Curly). I donāt believe he specified what Miseryās role would be in this version of the story.
Balrog was a recurring enemy type, with small versions of him appearing as common enemies and multiple versions of him appearing as boss fights. One asks if you want to beĀ āsoap friends,ā suggesting that Beta-Balrog (called Puu) was a bar of soap?Ā
The story seems to deal with an evil king who is abducting the Mimigas to eat them? Several characters in the beta claim that Mimigas are a delicacy and seem eager to eat them.Ā
Some areas from the beta are definitely similar to the final version, though they arenāt one-to-one. Thereās an early version of Mimiga village, the Sand Zone, and the Waterway, though during the later stage you are accompanied by Beta-Sue rather than Curly.Ā
The Beta version seems to have a more traditional ammo counter instead of the power-up system used in the final version, and enemies drop coins instead of the power-up crystals. Thereās also a gun/ammo shop in the Mimiga Village, suggesting youād need to buy weapons and ammo.Ā
You can see some footage fo the beta in action below. Thereās also additional videos and screenshots up on the Cave Story fansite.Ā
