The 22nd edition of the UCBMUN conference, UCBMUN XXII, will be lead by our newly elected Secretary-General Anisha Dangoria and Deputy Secretary-General Nik Mathur! Thank you again to our outgoing SG and DSG, Beckett Kelly and Allie Gordon - UCBMUN XXII will be building off of your success! 

This past weekend, UCBMUN hosted the 21st edition of our annual collegiate conference! Helmed by Secretary-General Beckett Kelly and Deputy Secretary-General Allie Gordon, nearly 600 delegates participated in UCBMUN, coming from both US and international schools. UCBMUN XXI featured four days of debate in 17 committees! 

The weekend started off with opening ceremonies, where the secretariat was introduced, and conference attendees heard a speech from UC Berkeley professor Dr. Nadesan Permaul, who spoke on the importance of liberalism in international relations. 

Our 110 staff were hard at work running committees that spanned specialized bodies and crisis committees, tackling a variety of topics. The Specialized Bodies, run by USG Wendie Yeung, included DISEC (international intervention in civil wars), UNESCO (media censorship and sexual education), the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (food security and food aid to developing countries), the 1989 NBA Owners Meeting (building a global game), and the Legal Committee (the Trial of the Juntas in Argentina’s Camara Court).

Crisis committees were organized by USGs Anisha Dangoria, Alison Spencer, and Patrick Babajanian, and included the 2014 Bangkok Shutdown, Teutonic Knights of 1226, the Death of Lenin, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the Porfiriato, the Hong Kong Riots of 1967, the Mau Mau Uprising, Building Zion: the Founding of Utah, the United Nations Security Council, the Ad-Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General, and the Egyptian Revolution JCC: Rebels vs. Government. 

Finally, the social events at UCBMUN XXI are not to be forgotten! Thursday night featured a Bear Crawl, with Friday evening featuring the inaugural Bear Fest, with local food trucks, karaoke, and a photo booth. Delegates and staff celebrated the end of debate on Saturday with Bear Rave, hosted at a San Francisco night club. 

Hosting a successful conference is an enormous endeavor, and we thank the Secretariat of UCBMUN XXI and all club members for their dedication and work this weekend! We couldn’t be more proud of you!

The second instalment of MUNSC Salient, organized by the United Nations Association of Slovenia, successfully concluded on July 15th. Here is a special wrap up from UNA Slovenia about what went on during the conference. 

The conference was held under the honorary patronage of Mr Borut Pahor, the President of Slovenia.The conference took place between July 11 and 15, 2016 at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Fundamentally a youth conference, the aim of MUNSC Salient is to supplement the traditional Model United Nations (MUN) experience with educational content in form of interactive lectures, roundtables and workshops. The 70 participants of the conference hailed from Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey. The overarching topic this year was “Contemporary Inequalities” and all three simulated committees saw fervent discussions on related issues. The UN Security Council discussed the threat posed by radicalization to international peace and security; the UN Human Rights Council discussed the right of peoples and individuals to international solidarity; and the European Council revisited the future of EU policy in the post-migration era.

UCBMUN was just ranked 7th in North America by Best Delegate in their 2015-2016 rankings of collegiate travel teams. This is the highest UCBMUN has ever been ranked, and congratulations are in order for Head Delegates Grayson Dimick and Nathan Black as well as every club member who traveled and completed this year! 

As Best Delegate wrote: Berkeley’s season has maintained their title as the top West Coast team on the circuit, with delegation awards on both coasts helping them to rise one place in the rankings since last year — this is now their new highest ranking ever. UCBMUN won Outstanding Small Delegation at UPMUNC this Autumn and brought home awards from CMUNNY and TrojanMUN. During the Spring season, UCB hosted UCBMUN and won awards at HNMUN and ChoMUN, in addition to home-state wins of Best Large at LAMUN and Outstanding Delegation at AggieMUN. This season had UCBMUN win the fourth-most individual awards on the circuit, and likely a new Frequent Flyer status for all their travel-heavy team members.

Berkeley’s head delegate Grayson Dimick had this to say about their season: “As a self-funded, West Coast team, the UC Berkeley Model UN team faces enormous logistical and financial challenges. This year, UCBMUN has risen to the challenge, with team members demonstrating exceptional dedication and enthusiasm. This has made possible the highest number of individual awards we’ve ever had in a single season, the highest number of members participating in conferences, and multiple delegation awards, including our first ever delegation award at UPMUNC. Beyond any awards, however, we’re most proud of the team spirit of UCBMUN. In an activity that is often seen as individual, our delegates see each conference, committee, and award as a team effort, and the support and guidance they give to their fellow members has been instrumental to our success this year on the circuit. We hope to continue our growth and our values of hard work, inclusion, and constant fun next year.”
