BESAL Light Machine Gun
This is the first video from my new project, The Armourer’s Bench. In this video we take a look at the British BESAL light machine gun - developed as an emergency substitute for the Bren.

New Project!
In case you missed it, this week I launched a new project called The Armourer’s Bench (TAB). It’s a collaborative project with my friend, and fellow historian and former armourer, Vic Tuff.
TAB is our attempt to bring together the knowledge and experience of Vic and myself in the form of a multi-media project using both video and written content to showcase the history of some of the world’s most interesting and important firearms.
This first video is an introduction to the project and we talk a little about our backgrounds and what we hope to achieve:
In our first 'proper' gun video we examine the British BESAL light machine gun! We had the rare opportunity to examine and disassemble a prototype example of what was intended to be a stop-gap Bren replacement! We were probably the first people to disassemble it is quite a few years and we're definitely the first to show it on camera!
We will have more videos up in the coming days, but I’m very excited about this project and the cool things I can show you guys! It will in no way mean I post less on Historical Firearms, its more of a companion project to bring you thing history we all love in another format!
If you want to find out more about the project or keep up to date with it you can find the TAB website here, the Facebook here and the TAB Youtube channel here.
We were recently lucky enough to examine a 3rd Pattern BESAL light machine gun dating from c.1942.
Here’s some photos of the BESAL Light Machine Gun, in this post I take a closer look at some of the weapon’s features.

Patents: BESAL Light Machine Gun
During the research for the TAB video on the BESAL (check that out here if you haven’t already) we managed to find copies of all of the patents protecting Henry Faulkner's design for the BESAL.
The patent drawings are fascinating and well worth a look, check them out here.
