"Maybe that bullet was meant for me, huh?"
Atta Girl: Frank Castle, The Female Gaze, and the Appeal of the Anti-āAnti-Heroā
warnings: n/a word count:Ā 4.5k a/n: In which I sat down and wrote my first-ever big girl essay about the shocking phenomenon of Frank Castle as (imo) the MCUās most feminist character, and why I and so many women are drawn to him ā for reasons other than thirst. (Though thatās fine too.)Ā Didnāt intend to have this finished as part of the Bernthal Big Bang going on this week, but the timing worked out incredibly well, soĀ ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ Thereās no real point, and itās a little dense (hence why I posted externally), but a year-plus of feelings about Frank and safety and comfort characters and weāve landed here ā a place I think plenty of others can sympathize with. Happy Bernthirst week yāall!Ā
____________
Iāve spent much of this year rewatching a lot of old favorites when it comes to television. Partly because there hasnāt been much in the way of new, interesting TV coming out this year (excluding Ted Lasso, of course), and partly because the ongoing stress of living in a pandemic makes my brain want to leak out of my ears, so I need something a bit more comforting than Halston or Brand New Cherry Flavor.
One of those old favorites has been The Punisher. Yāknow, the Netflix Marvel series starring Jon Bernthal as a former Marine hellbent on finding whoās responsible for the death of his wife and children? Not outwardly my bag as someone who tends to stick to rom-coms, I know. But itās a show I discovered in a pandemic, which I am now rewatching in the same pandemic. For the...fourth time, I think? Iāve lost count. It mightāve beat out Narcos by now. (I know. Donāt judge me.)
Iāve been picking this show apart since day one ā pulling apart how and why the show does female characters better than any other superhero property, breaking down its differences from Daredevil, its sister show, occasionally psychoanalyzing Billy Russo to figure out why heās such a punk ass bitch.
But the theme I keep coming back to, over and over again, is something that almost has nothing to do with the plot of the show itself. It has nothing to do with Frank Castleās quest for revenge for his family, his blood streak of tearing down former commanders from the inside ā but rather, it has everything to do with Frank himself.
Heās violent. Heās a killer. He has a mean streak a mile wide and a temper as easily triggered as a well-placed tripwire. On the surface, heās the poster child for masculinity.
So why do so many women love him?

Shane Walsh Imprint Soulmate AU request
Author's note: Over a month ago, @slavic-empress was kind enough to make two requests! This is the first. It was for Shane Walsh from the Soulmate AU prompt list. Imprint was chosen. The prompt meaning the soulmates touch will leave an imprint on their skin. The term touch was taken a little liberally. I based it upon touch being a conscious decision, the giver giving the receiver the touch and therefore the imprint so that one soulmate could imprint the other without their knowledge. This is also the first submission to the @bernthirst-events Bernthal Birthday Big Bang in honor of the man himself and celebrating Jon's birthday.
You have been friends with Rick Grimes for a long time. Which meant that for an equally long time, you had to put up with Shane Walsh. The two of you got along like cats and dogs; not at all. With the two men friends and coworkers, it was often that any get together put the two of you in close proximity. Being the polite one, not wanting to ruin anything for your friends or cause a scene, you often did the tried and true method of grinning and bearing it. The snide comments, the cocky attitude, the general asshole nature of the man just grated on every one of your nerves. The exact opposite of everything you have wanted to deal with in a human, all the traits that just drove you crazy. But you had to suck it up and deal with it. He was close friends with Rick and it wasn't like that was going to change. Neither was your friendship with the man. So, you were the adult in the situation.
Yet another Small Engine Repair fan art because Iām absolutely not obsessed with this movie ;)
