Another sem is about to begin and prudent UP students will be scouring information about the best (and probably petiks) GE's to take this sem. Should they notice the name "Bernard Caslib" jumping out amongst the dizzying rows of GE's to choose from, here's a little something they ought to know about the class--or at least, how I had experienced the class. Allow me to state as early as now, that the Caslib Philo 10 class is DEFINITELY not petiks. So easy-A scavengers, (and I say A is for 'Asshole'. I'm sorry but seriously... why the hell are you in UP again?) steer clear of this demanding, albeit one of the most exciting GE's in the University.
My Philo 10 experience this summer in UP Diliman was life-changing. Philo 10 in Sir Caslib’s class opened my mind to new possibilities and to radical ways of thinking. His class made me feel like I actually did have power over my life, and that I wasn’t wandering this world aimlessly, or that I wasn’t merely a sum of everything happening around me. Compared to other GE’s I’ve taken, his class is rather difficult, albeit extremely rewarding. I think it’s what I expected UP classes during the days when I was still an idealistic freshie. I have encountered a number of bland GE’s that have resulted to my disillusionment in UP education. Thankfully, there are still classes like Sir Caslib’s that do not spoonfeed students, nor abandon students to mountains of meaningless seatwork and papers. Philo 10 is enlightening and empowering and well worth taking. I can say this because I had been granted a terrible schedule this summer: a 7-9 class in the morning, and a long grueling 6-hour break to kill right after it. I could have easily dropped Philo 10 for a more convenient schedule—after all, I didn’t even have any idea what I was getting myself into. I didn’t have the slightest clue regarding Sir Caslib’s reputation; all that I was able to glean out of my google search was that Philo 10 under him was fantastic. True enough, it is and I do not regret a single minute of the time I dedicated to this class.
The readings from Philo 10 are probably the only readings I’ll never turn into scratch paper, use as fuel for barbecue, or wipe wet surfaces with. Philo 10 helped me slowly overcome my fear of audiences, after acting, singing, and dancing activities. I can’t even believe that I got myself to dance, knowing what a hopeless case I am when it comes to dancing. But I guess that’s the magic of the Philo 10 class. It makes you do things you thought you could never do before, think in ways you’ve never imagined yourself thinking. Philo 10 is not for the lazy. It is not for the narrow-minded (or maybe it is, as a cure), nor for the grade-conscious student hunting CRS for an easy-uno subject. Philo 10 will reward you sufficiently if you work hard enough, but it is more important to note that its rewards are not found in the GWA you get, but in the way it has changed your way of seeing.
