Ferdinand sends a cordial letter to Count Varley that basically says "I'm marrying your daughter, you're not invited to the wedding, she's going to live with me from now on, and I'm coming to kick your ass after our honey moon. Running is pointless. Sincerely, your son in law and worst nightmare, Ferdinand von Aegir. "
"PS: she would like to inform you that she will no longer be a part of house Varley and also, fuck you. She didn't say that but I felt like you should know."
The fact that Ferdinand was once going to be married to Bernadetta back when they were younger came out of nowhere for me. I think it's cute though, that they became friends in the academy and, romantic or not, enjoy being together. He's really sweet with her and I know he would be good emotional support for her if she ever needed him.
Oh man, I'm a sucker for arranged marriage being done well and this particular one is done real well. Cuz like, Count Varley wanted to marry her off for power and it never went through but in the end they do marry and he gets jack shit out of it cuz Ferdinand supports Bernie absolutely and completely and she's like "great" and just leaves house Varley behind completely
So Varley gets exactly what he wanted years ago and also doesn't at the same time. Meanwhile, Bernie is free and happy and has a husband who loves and supports her and makes her smile and is great
I just realized I ship them, whoops
I feel like Mitya would be a super good big brother figure to Bernie. And would happily remove Count Varley from existence.
Oh definitely, he somehow has bastard baby brother and cool big brother energy at the same time
As for Count Varley, I think even Marianne would have some choice words for that dude, he's the worst
I'm very sad that Constance's trauma is played as a joke, at least as far as I've seen in the story a laugh track plays the first time it happens. This is just the same thing they did with Bernie :/
It's not really played for comedy, at least not constantly. It gets serious focus when it needs it, otherwise it's exaggerated for ease of portrayal. Connie and Yuri's paralogue for example is an instance where her sunlight persona get serious attention. The change from her former self to the meek, apologetic Connie in the sun gets highlighted and connected to her trauma
If they kept playing it up seriously it would get bleak quickly so they balance it between the exaggerated, easier to portray version and the serious one for serious moments.
As for Bernie, it's exaggerated again but she's actually a lot like me with her paranoia that everyone is out to get her. And since this game is from Byleth's perspective and no one has an inner voice, they make her say all the things she would usually think out loud. *shrugs* I've seen much worse portrayals, this game doesn't bother me since I can explain it away fairly easily

... what if Bernadetta was the Dragonborn...?
She'd shout people off mountains on goddamn accident
I don't even ship them but Ferdinand kicking Varley's ass specifically has become my favorite idea. I don't know why, maybe it's because Ferdie would already be offended that Varley is such a shit noble, and then he hears what Varley has done to his sweet Bernadetta ans it's time to commit a murder. Also possibly because Ferdinand is actually a puppy so you know something pushing him to get that mad would be real serious business.
It's even better when you find out that they were supposed to be married and why it didn't happen. Like, he thinks the world of Bernie and he would absolutely loath her old man, I can absolutely see him barge into Varley estate and just rip the old man a new one
Man, I wish we'd get that as an event in the game...
Alduin: *world ending dragon noises* // Bernadetta: *unimpressed face after everything she’s dealt with* “No, bad.”
Someone: how are you not scared?!
Bernie: that's my secret, I'm always scared.
