for: @benjaminconrad location: some beach somewhere time: close to midnight
Tiredness sunk into her bones but she was wide awake as thoughts fogged her brain --- a terrible blend of restlessness and hopelessness mixed to make the cocktail that was her life, poison for a bright mind. Maya had no sense of direction, not in life, not even right now as she drove to an unknown destination, only one purpose of this journey; she simply wanted to get away. From nothing and everything. Pity parties had become a common occurrence lately and they had always left a sour taste in her mouth, and the one she had thrown herself moments ago, involving blank documents and staring at the ceiling, had lasted much longer than necessary and would for surely haunt her even if sleep was merciful enough to come knocking.
Darkness made it hard to tell which beach she stopped at, but that didn’t matter much. Picking up the half a bottle of Jack that she had abandoned in her car forever ago, Maya walked inwards and laid down onto the cooling sand, facing up to the star-speckled sky and listened to the waves lap across the shore, an instant calm to her the chaos that was her mind. The alcohol helped too — warm from being left in the car, but it went down just the same.
Sand was a great cover for footsteps, the soft shuffling of another soul was drowned among the crashes of the waves but the shadow that was cast in the pale moonlight, was unmissable, with an eye roll only noticeable to the stars, Maya gave the source the briefest of glances before returning her gaze to the ocean, “If you’re here to tell me to move, you can forget it. I’m not a tourist,” she states, voice surprisingly clear. It may have been a pathetic sight but when had she ever cared enough to change.
