Paint the town red? In Nariwa-cho, Okayama prefecture you will be able to see unique historic village which used to prosper from its copper mines and production of bengara (ベンガラcolcothar) pigment. The village was built by builders brought over from Shimane prefecture. These builders were carpenters who specialized constructing in religious buildings. And, because bengara prevents ageing damage due to its weather resistant characteristics, you will see the “color coordinated” village painted or dyed with this red hue.
