Does FeralCup ever ride dragons standing up like Valka does in HTTYD2? And can he do that sweet-ass move where a dragon barrel-roles and he runs along the outside like Valka does in the fight between the Bewilderbeasts? Basically, what I'm asking is, does Hiccup ride dragons in the same manner as his mother, or does he have a different style of riding?

His style is very similar to his mother’s. You’ll actually see in chapter nine that he’s unaccustomed to riding in one position for extended periods of time and so it makes things a little awkward for him when he first starts riding Toothless with the saddle and tailfin rig. Also (I’ll explain in a sec), Hiccup doesn’t like being restricted to one dragon, really, in the air. Where Valka will generally stick to Cloudjumper 90% of the time, Hiccup is constantly dropping from one dragon to the next (which often gives his mother a heart attack, but she learns to get used to it). The dragons got to see Hiccup as a baby, as a toddler, as a child, and then eventually as a teenager and young man, so there’s this unspoken rule of Protect the human’s helpless hatchling. So Hiccup can kind of just run from the wings of one dragon in flight, and another will rise to accept him. It’s almost as if he doesn’t really get that he doesn’t have wings too, because there’s always been a dragon to catch him, so he’s never been afraid of heights or falling. Gravity’s just part of the process before landing.

The one big difference between Hiccup and Valka, though, is Valka is completely bonded with Cloudjumper. Until Hiccup crashes into Toothless, he’s just been surrounded by dragons his whole life. They’re like his family, and I think it’s hard to establish a bond like Valka and Cloudjumper have when there’s so many dragons around, always clamoring for affection and attention. He has “favorites”, sure, dragons that he prefers to ride and dragons that he likes to cuddle with. But there’s nothing like what Valka described with her Stormcutter (I believe it’s along the lines of “whose soul reflected my own”). And so when he crashes with Toothless, not only is Hiccup kind of fated to be with him, the isolation that he experiences while caring for him allows for him to open up and make that bond. They have to relearn how to fly together— for Toothless, he has to adjust to working with a human, not being one hundred percent in control. And for Hiccup, he has to learn to stay in one place, to keep a sitting position, and to learn how to communicate with Toothless in a way he hasn’t had to with other dragons. Valka seems to use her staff for most of the communicating with dragons, so in my headcanon, Hiccup has done the same. That’s how he’s always directed dragons that he’s ridden in the past. Now, with Toothless, it’s a series of leans, side nudges, head pats, and spoken words. It’s a totally new change for him.
