How do you come up with names for your characters? They’re all so unique and good
Aw I’m glad you like! I like to use names I’ve never used before, but also use words that might have never been used as names. I usually try to develop a theme in the stories that help map out what names/words I might use next. For Nasty Red Dogs, I really wanted to find words that could help describe the characters and give inspiration to their personalities.
I really enjoyed how much opportunity of interpretation these words gave me, while also giving a sort of distinct feeling to them. They’re both used as nouns and they have a sort of physical ..element to what they are describing. I liked that welt’s name described something red and swollen, or implies an injury or attack on something. I feel like that helps describe how aggressive welt is and what its like to be around that character. Laggard’s name kind of captures everything you’d guess from just looking at him. I like that the example given was that “there is no time for laggards.” When i read that it makes me wonder why that is. why don’t we have time for those who fall behind? why is that a negative thing inherently, at least for this word? When you look at the character, you can almost tell by his face that no one has given him time. he knows he’s unwanted. and its pretty sad to be an unwanted person. er. or dog. Anyway, those are the kinds of things i search for in names sometimes. I just try to go with what feels right for the character and the story. It can take a few tries before i feel satisfied though.
