Laurie, I don’t remember at this point when I followed you, but it was because I saw you in the group chats quite a lot and you were absolutely lovely. LAURIE: There are things you get used to, growing up in Factorystation. Regularly not having enough to eat, getting sick more than the rest ofthe Ark, seeing more kids end up in the Sky Box than in regularly payingjobs. It’s unfortunate and it’s unfair, but it’s life. What growing up in Factorystation didn’t prepare you for, though, is your neighbor and fellow seamstress,Aurora Blake. Even by your account, Aurora is… odd (and you once stole fromyour Earth Skills teacher on a dare in high school, so you yourself are, fairto say, a little odd). She’s jumpy and nervous and always fumbling for moneywhen she picks up her rations, but she’s also kindhearted and has a smile inher eyes, and that’s why you end up befriending her. You know about her dealwith the guard, though you don’t know why it exists- you suppose to get extrarations for her and her son, or something of the like. While she’s with themember of the guard, you watch Bellamy for her. The first few times he comesover, you try to entertain him with what little you have around your quarters,but he seems content to grip his old book like its his lifeline. And so, youcreate a routine with the young boy where he reads and sits on your floor whileyou sew and work on garments for your clients. The first time he strikes up aconversation with you it’s because you have a paper of your own, just a simplepage of hymns from Vera Kane, whose religion you take part in (you visit theTree often). He’s intrigued for a moment, but seems to prefer his book of mythsto the myths of the current day. When Bellamy’s old enough, he stops coming toyour quarters and Aurora pulls back even more. You don’t get to chat with hernearly as much anymore, and when you do see her, she always looks haggard. Butyour life goes on, with sewing and stitches and needles and thread. It’sunthinkable when you hear about you helped hide all those years, when the secretcomes out that a third Blake hid under the floor. It’s even more unthinkable whennot much later, a hundred kids are sent to the ground, and Bellamy is one ofthem, but only because he shot the Chancellor. When you get to the ground withthe rest of the Ark, the magnificence of Earth astounds you, and you wish Verawas there to see it. Aurora, too. You go to visit the Tree, that Marcus Kanehas planted in Vera’s honor, and you pray that it grows, like all the otherwonderful life on Earth, like the bugs and the trees and the flowers. Maybe it’sloyalty to Vera that makes you trust Marcus over Pike when the Farm Stationsurvivors join your camp, but either way, all Pike seems to want is a war, andyou couldn’t want anything less. And maybe after a life of not enough, notenough food or heat and too much hard work, maybe that’s why this enchanted Cityof Light Jaha preaches about sounds so good. You take the chip, you take theleap, and all the pain and suffering of your life, all the times you wenthungry, they’re erased. It doesn’t even phase you when you have to fight againstthe boy who used to hang around your quarters in Polis, or when you face hislittle sister with her giant sword. You do it because ALIE tells you to. Butyou’re a seamstress, not a fighter.
