"Bell Borca was Agrus Kos's investigation partner as a Wojek. Wojeks are essentially law enforcement detectives of the Boros Legion. His untimely demise before the Decamilliennial and subsequent cover up led Agrus Kos to uncover the plot of Szadek and House Dimir to destroy the Guildpact and expose the long thought destroyed guild to the masses." -Umbral, the Archivist
Now that I’ve had some time to play with the cards in Commander Legends, I want to shout out one Commander in particular I didn’t see on a lot of people’s lists.
Well, I saw him on a lot of people’s worst lists. Deservedly. But I still think he’s interesting.
Okay hear me out.
The execution here is... eh? So the idea is we want to exile something big, and then swing in and win with commander damage. Except Bell has no evasion and no protection, he doesn’t do anything the turn he comes out, and there’s no guarantee we exile something worthwhile. Even with Top or Rack shenanigans, we go through all that trouble to do, what? Get 6, 7 power? Boros is not exactly known for big splashy spells. And that’s *if* we can connect. (He’s a Spirit, at least give him Flying, come on.)
That said, I think he is playing in some really interesting design space for Boros, and taps into an overlap in the Red White color pairing we haven’t really seen before. Exile.
You’re starting to see it now, right?
There’s some really interesting potential in a Red-White Exile Matters deck. It’s a shame it comes stapled onto what is ultimately a pretty lackluster commander. Maybe if instead of “greatest converted mana cost” his power was the “total converted mana cost” of cards exiled this turn. (Granted that would be pretty explosive, but he still gets chumped and dies to removal soooo...)
Or tie it to something else. Gain life, deal damage, gain abilities... there’s room to explore here. It’s an interesting direction to push Boros, that isn’t the usual go wide aggro strategy. I hope Wizards continues to explore it future sets.
Bell Borca, sergent spectral
Lore :
