In early October, the temperature at the dawn of Betsukai-cho is 2°C. It was so cold that my hands bite, and the frost and fog covered the field like a white veil and it was beautiful.

Far away, the mountains of the Shiretoko Peninsula.

The earth is wide. It was a scene I wanted to see forever.

Betsukaicho is a town located in Notsuke-gun, which is under the jurisdiction of the Nemuro Promotion Bureau in Hokkaido.

Located at the eastern edge of Hokkaido, the eastern part overlooks the northern territory across the Notsuke Channel.

The area is the third largest "town" in Japan.

The first place is Ashoro-cho, Ashoro-gun, the second is Engaru-cho, Monbetsu-gun, both in Hokkaido.

Most of the vast town area is a gently rolling hilly area, and ranches made by cutting out the wilderness spread over almost the entire town area.

While you can see the idyllic scenery of the vast plain like Hokkaido, there is Notsuke Peninsula, the largest sand beak in Japan in the east, and Lake Furen in the south. It has a variety of landscapes, such as the Notsuke Furen Provincial Natural Park, and is rich in natural conditions.

Dairy farming is flourishing in the plains, producing the largest amount of raw milk in Japan. Annual production is 430,000 tons. Famous as a raw material supplier for Haagen-Dazs.

Back in Betsukai-chō 別海町

So I finally went back to Japan again after a mere 9 years went by since I was there last. This time I was painting a big mural in Betsukai/別海町Hokkaido and visiting my good friend Mika and her family. Mika has been a tremendous help with organizing everything. Weather was really hot and we had to paint at the end of the day when the sun starts going down. The rest of the time was just about…
