Wu Guanzhong 吳冠中 (1919-2010) was a contemporary Chinese painter widely recognized as a founder of modern Chinese painting, and considered to be one of the greatest contemporary Chinese painters. His works show both Western Eastern influences, such as Fauvism and Chinese calligraphy. Wu studied in Paris in the 1940s and the Western-style works he produced in China in the 1950s made him a target during the Cultural Revolution.
