was it another nightmare? yes. was this one particularly a little more vivid than all of the other ones? yes. was she awake for days at this point? yes. was it so fucking vivid, she wasn’t sure if anything in front of her had been real or not?

it’s funny. the horror movies never seem to prepare you for the after. — nothing does.

“h-h-he’s fuckin’ comin’. he’s comin’, i didn’t kill all of ‘em like i thought, and you shoul’ leave. now.”

❝ just a little bit angry, i think, ❞ merritt stretches her leg out so he can see the scrape on her knee, the blood from it dripping delicately down the backside of her calf, almost begging to be wiped away. she's all smiles despite the stinging . . . sparkling eyes unmoving from him as he walks around her to sit by her feet. ❝ you're sweet for leaving your friends to come take care of me, ❞

she's had her eye on him all night. it's like her gaze cut right through his aforementioned friends the second they all walked into the club. and instead of simply approaching him, what had she done . . . ?

❝ i'm like, super clumsy, ❞ she continues. in reality, it had taken a lot of poise, a lot of skill to trip and fall in such a way that she 1) fell right in front of him, 2) gave the impression that he may have accidentally sent her toppling, and 3) only ended up with a scraped knee !

“Are you sure? You really sure you’re ready to tussle with this muscle?” Grinning, she flexes her arm, a faux display of pure strength. She’d never won an arm wrestle before in her life, but it didn’t mean she couldn’t. “Bring it on.”

his back hits the wall hard, a wince grit into his teeth. leland has half the instinct to shove him back — he could. he could get chad out of his space right now, but he stays where he is. his hands come up, bracing around chad's wrists, which are curled tightly in the fabric of his shirt collar. leland stares back at him wide-eyed, but stone-cold sober; ❝ you seriously think i could do something like this? ❞ two of their friends are dead. and there had been nothing he could do. nothing any of them could do to stop it. and you thought you'd escaped it, that basement, that grief—

❝    i    hate    comin'    off    like    a    country    girl    who    hates    ❛       city    slickers    ❜    but    if    one    more    person    spills    their    overpriced    latte    on    me    on    the    subway,    i    might    be    forced    to    do    somethin'    drastic.    ❞    she    says,    sweet    southern    accent    coming    out    thick    as    she    gets    more    and    more    agitated.    she    hated    taking    the    subway,    but    walking    everywhere    here    wasn't    an    option    when    it    was    almost    six    miles    to    blackmore    college    from    her    little    apartment    in    bed-stuy.
