The following days were sombre in Muskoka, overpowered by the pouring rain and a dark grey sky that signalled Fallās arrival. It always started that way, until the real cold turned the rain into soft, white snowflakes.
It was late morning when Heather had her first break from her lessons. She and Bridgette had come out of a Linguistics lecture with an impending headache. Despite the weather outside, they decided to spend their break in the outdoor hallway, sitting on one of the benches that lined its way.
Bridgette looked intent on preparing her joint, while Heather stared at the wall of water that fell outside the protection of the hallwayās roof.
āSo, Josee and Jacques are sure? Your parents want you to move out?ā, Bridgette asked, lighting up the joint and taking a smooth drag from it. Heather wrinkled her nose. The smell of weed used to bother her, but Bridgette and Geoff had almost desensitized her in the past years. Almost.
āYeah. Apparently, they think itās good for my independenceā, she mocked, imitating her fatherās cadence. She hadnāt been surprised when her friend broke the news of what had happened during the dinner, but that didnāt stop her from feeling a blind rage towards her parents.
āItās not untrue, but itās awfully convenientā, Bridgette sighed, exhaling smoke that lingered longer and more heavily due to the humidity.
