quest for a pattern: flat-knit toys
My teenage niece (oh god, is she on tumblr now?) has learned to knit, and I offered to find some fun patterns for her. Most of the fun patterns I’d usually suggest don’t work with her skill set. No crocheting yet and no double-pointed needles. I’ll probably suggest knitting rectangles and seaming them together to make shapes.

knitting advice?
My goal was to knit socks for everyone for Christmas. That means 5 pairs of socks. Two pairs of men's socks and then three pairs of women's socks. One pair of the women's socks will be bigger (size 9).
so my questions:
1. how much sock yarn do I need? or should I use a heftier yarn, such as DK?
2. for the size 9 socks, would an "average" women's sock pattern fit?
3. Should I forget making them all socks because no one really cares anyway?
